Not A Successor

Industry 4.0 built the capability layer: connected assets, data platforms, automation, analytics. Industry 5.0 states what that capability should optimize for.

New Metrics

Energy per unit produced, material circularity, and human-in-the-loop ergonomics become KPIs that need instrumentation and context — alongside OEE and quality.

Same Plumbing

The plant's shared namespace must now carry energy meters, environmental conditions, and richer state models. It is the same UNS and contextualization discipline, extended.

The label attracts two opposite failure modes.

  • Treating it as a rebrand: new slides while operations continue exactly as before. The pillars are measurable — without new metrics, nothing changed.
  • Using it to postpone foundations: declaring Industry 4.0 “over” and skipping the connectivity and context work its outcomes still depend on.
  • Bolting on sustainability reporting without instrumentation — estimates that cannot survive an audit or drive one operational decision.
  • Designing “human-centric” AI with no operator input. Human-centricity begins with the people who will actually use the system.

Does Industry 5.0 replace Industry 4.0?

No. It builds on it. The connectivity, data platforms, and analytics of Industry 4.0 remain the technical base; Industry 5.0 redirects them toward human, resilience, and sustainability outcomes. A plant that skipped the 4.0 foundations has nothing to redirect.

Is Industry 5.0 a standard?

No. It is a policy framing, articulated most prominently by the European Commission. The technical standards underneath — ISA-95/IEC 62264, OPC UA, MQTT with Sparkplug B — are unchanged; Industry 5.0 changes what they are asked to deliver.

Where should a plant start with Industry 5.0?

By checking whether its data foundation can carry the new metrics: energy and resource consumption attributable to products, state models that capture human interventions, and supply visibility for resilience.
